Making More Paper!

June 19, 21 and 22 I'll be back in Hook Pottery and Paper Studio making more paper! I just returned from hiking and camping in the Gila Wilderness area of New Mexico and my head is full of rock images that were pecked and painted by ancient people who lived in the southern New Mexico region. I'm swirling with ideas that will be inspired my the Mimbres, Mogollon, and Ancestral Pueblo cultures.

Dorothy will be interviewed on the radio show WVLP on Friday, February 17 at 11:00 am, hosted by Gregg Hertzlieb and Melissa Washburn. The topic is " Art and Conservation". Dorothy will discuss conservation and preservation of Rock Art in North America and the importance of preserving significant prehistoric sites.

Exciting New Technique

Many of Ms Graden's new works are pastels on large sheets of pulp painted cotton rag that she created in the paper studio. Each sheet of paper is a "one of a kind" work of art, with the pulp carefully layered on the rag, providing a 3 dimensional look that can only be attained using this method. The pastels bring out the interior shapes of the paper, keeping the "rock art" themes she so loves. She will often add India ink for detail and definition, adding, yet , another dimension to the work. Every piece "pops" with energy.

Handmade Archival Paper

Many of you have asked for smaller works, so I've been making beautiful archival handmade paper with the help of my friend and Master Papermaker, Andrea Peterson. The paper is cotton and abaca and also a mix of both. Some of my smaller images lend themselves to their own worlds and they are pretty pleased about it.

I have completed 6 of these. I will post them on this site as they are finished. If you would like to see a better photo, please contact me.
